Mythical Soutpansberg & VhembeThe Soutpansberg region (Vhembe district) of Limpopo is steeped in ancient history and mythology, with the discovery in 1933 of an Iron Age metropolis almost a thousand years old. Today the Kingdom of Mapungubwe is South Africa's 5th World Heritage Site. The region also serves as the gateway to the most northern parts of the Kruger National Park (KNP) through the Punda Maria and Pafuri gates. Vhembe incorporates endless expanses of undulating indigenous bush, characterised by the magnificent baobab in the northern parts of the region, stretching all the way to the Limpopo River and the border with Zimbabwe. The area also has a wonderful variety of wildlife, a profusion of birds, many ancient ruins and great adventure tourism opportunities. Take your time exploring the majestic Soutpansberg Mountains ('Salt Pan Mountain') with its wide variety of bird, mammal, reptile and amphibian species. Ancient baobabs and cycads are among the over 340 indigenous tree species to be found in the Soutpansberg.
